Is Teething the Culprit Behind Your Child’s Sleep Issues?
Hey, it's Sara here and I want to talk about a SUPER common question I hear all the time...
“My baby is teething, is that why they are up and down all night long and/or not wanting to take naps?”
Ahh teething...blamed for everything ;) While teething can temporarily be miserable for a baby, and we can and should provide all the comfort and frozen washcloths and teething toys, babies actually spend most of their lives preparing for their teeth to come in and I don't think we should use teething as the scapegoat for poor sleeping habits!
The misery of teething usually lasts for just a short time, but in that time babies can learn some different habits which affect their ability to fall asleep independently. This is usually the source of the struggles.
We can balance the need to comfort our babies when they aren't feeling well, with the need to stick to our normal routines as much as possible. After all, a solid daily routine actually enables you to quickly identify when your baby is truly ill and may need medical attention!
When teething and several sleepless nights in a row over a period of weeks or months always seem to coincide, let's look at what may be the deeper issue: babies who haven't learned how to fall asleep independently. (And thank goodness that's an easy fix ;) )
