Safe Sleep for Toddlers in Cribs

Now that your little baby isn't so little any more, and they're super strong and mobile, we don't need to worry so much about stuff like what position they're sleeping in. However we of course still want to be sure we have thought of everything when it comes to their safety in the crib.

So for a toddler who is still sleeping in a crib, which “safe sleep” rules for 1 year old and up are still in and which ones are out?

  • “Back to Sleep?” - your toddler will get into all sorts of crazy positions and that's okay. After 1 you no longer need to lay them down on their backs.

  • No soft bedding? – I still recommend this for the crib. A 1 year old in a crib can have a light blanket if needed, but save the pillows and comforters for when they transition into a big-kid bed. Consider layering them in a onesie, zipper jammies, and a toddler sleep sack to keep them warm and cozy in the crib.

  • No toys or other objects in crib? – we still don't want to overdo it, but a lovey or one stuffed animal or dolly is okay. Examine each item for any small pieces which could potentially break off and become a choking hazard.

  • Crib safety? – make sure the crib is in good condition with a tightly-fitting mattress, and crib slats with no more than 6 centimeters of space in between. I like to have the crib 1 foot away from the wall and well away from windows, vents, outlets, light fixtures, and other furniture items.

  • Room safety? – remove any hanging mobiles, décor on the walls near the crib, curtains or window blind pulls, etc. Your toddler will pull up to stand in the crib, and try to grab anything within reach. Cameras should ideally be placed across the room from the crib or mounted near the ceiling where the toddler cannot reach them or strike them with a toy. I also recommend a room temperature of between 68-72 degrees.

Is your toddler showing signs of wanting to climb out of the crib? Let's try to discourage that as long as possible.

  • dress your toddler in a toddler-sized sleep sack to discourage climbing

  • lower the mattress all the way down

  • you can consider a crib tent but this is not considered safe sleep-friendly due to risk of entrapment, you could possibly use it for naps while you are around to supervise

  • Place pillows on the floor around the crib to break a fall

  • Don't mention climbing or scold your child for it, you don't want them to become focused on it or treat it like a game.

  • Check the room for overall babyproofing in case your child does climb out and explore while you are not looking.
